π Every Tools a Hammer
Synopsis
Every Tools a Hammer is a Books by Adam Savage which is partially a memoir, but also has some helpful making tips and tricks to stay organised and focused. In many ways the book is a love letter to making.
Thoughts
List Making
I love Adams focus on list making, in many ways I feel like I have also gone through the evolution of believing that organisational tools are the antithesis of creativity to instead realising that they are key to freeing up brain power for creative freedom. Furthermore, the idea of using half shaded boxes instead of a check is great for powering through something, using the list as a way of keeping momentum as well as organising thought.
Failure
βFail Fastβ is just a new way of saying you need to iterate to be successful.
Obsession
I completely agree on the discussion about obsession being a poorly viewed attribute in society when it is not. It reminds me of a conversation I had where it was pointed out that if anyone put as much effort into their job as some athletes they would be viewed as absolutely nutter butters. Instead I agree there is a healthy and foten necessary amount of obsession required to get anything done to a reasonable degree. The fact that society has such a poor view on it, often calling it a disorder, when so much of history and invention has relied on people who were obsessed with their craft.
Collaboration
Delegation is difficult for everyone, a loss of control, but it is important to make a greater piece. Furthermore, often different personalities can provide different outlooks onto a project that can be useful.
